I received four identical versions of this message, targeting four separate domains — some of which were entirely unrelated. Don't be fooled, don't respond to these domain scams. Once you respond, they'll find ways to get money out of you, by selling you "services" that you don't need, or by registering your domains themselves, and then trying to selling them back to you.
I changed the domain in the message to MYDOMAIN.

Subject: Internet copyright of MYDOMAIN (To Principal)
Dear President&CEO,
We are a professional intellectual property right consultant organization in Asia, who mainly deal with the global domain name registration and internet intellectual property right protection.
Right now we have an important issue to confirm with you. On July. 18, 2009, we formally received an application, one company named "Shasea International Holdings Ltd." applied for the brand keyword "MYDOMAIN" and following domain names:
MYDOMAIN.biz
MYDOMAIN.hk
MYDOMAIN.mobi
with our organization.
During our preliminary investigation, we found that these domain names' keyword is identical with your trademark. I wonder whether you consigned Shasea company to register these domain names with us? Or is Shasea company your business partner or distributor in Asia? If you have no relationship with this company, we assume that they have other purposes to obtain these domain names.
Currently, we have already postponed this company's application temporarily. Therefore please let the relevant person make a confirmation with me by telephone or email as soon as possible.
Thanks & Regards,
Jack Li

Thank you for posting about this. We just got one of these at my company and despite considering myself someone who is pretty good at spotting stuff, I thought this might be (even if it was irrelevant to us) a legitimate request since some companies do pursue lawsuits against domain name owners (see nissan.com)

Great blog and will post if we get any others.
Same email, the company they claimed were trying to register domain names with my company name was "Butaho Holdings Ltd". My email was from Ron Yang, at www.bestweb.-hk.com. Beware this website....when I googled it, it actually does look feasible.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was odd when I enquired what they were trying to sell me and at what cost.... the cost was astronomical - lucky for me I smelled a rat.
Thanks for the posting, otherwise I might have been quite worried.
Thanks for posting this. Three of our top company managers received this and came to me as IT director to investigate. Fortunately I located this post and was able to avert any possible problems.

These spams are dropped from a domain registered to an ad agency in the Fukien province. From the way they use Hong Kong as their (fake) base, how the domain is registered through a registrar in Xiamen, and how they include Taiwanese domain names as candidates for trademark dispute, it's pretty obvious they are Fukienese organized crime. Their broken MIME header even contains the word DRAGON - They are probably younger generation members, immersed in western culture, and probably thought it would be funny if they named themselves the Fukienese Dragons (from the "Corruptor", an American movie with Chow-Yun-Fat).

I working in Asia and I too received this email and initially thought it was legitimate.
ReplyDeleteWhen told I would need to pay some money became suspicious.
Very professional in regards to the communication, follow up, invoicing etc.
Thanks to all for posting on here to confirm my suspicions.
Details of the correspondence I received are below.
Dear President & CEO,
We are a professional organization mainly engaged in Internet intellectual property management in Asia. Currently, we have a pretty important issue needing to confirm with your company.
On February .5. 2010, we received an application formally. One company named "Mao-mao Shares Investment Co., Ltd.." wanted to applied for the Internet Keyword “keyword inserted here” and some domain names from our organization.
Now we are handling with the registration of these domain names and find that the keyword of these domain names and Internet Keyword is identical with your company's. So we have to confirm with you at two points:
1. If your company has consigned or authorized Mao-mao to apply to register those domain names and the Internet Keyword with us, then we will finish their registration according to the procedures.
2. If your company has not consigned or authorized Mao-mao to apply to register those domain names and the internet Keyword, then according to our working experience, they might have other purposes. So we have responsibility to confirm with you.
Now we temporarily have not finished the registration for Mao-mao , but delayed their application through the procedures, but this is not the best way. In order to solve this case in a better way, please contact me through email or phone the very first asaastime. Waiting for your reply.
Thanks & Regards,
Loudyn

ReplyDeleteSubject: "DOMAIN" Internet Copyright
From: Adam Hao
Dear President/CEO,
We are a professional intellectual property right consultant organization in Asia, who mainly deal with the global domain name registration and internet intellectual property right protection.
Right now we have an important issue to confirm with you. On Feb. 09, 2010, we formally received an application, one company named "Coon Holding Ltd" applied for the brand keyword "DOMAIN" and following domain names:
DOMAIN.net.cn
DOMAIN.asia
DOMAIN.hk
DOMAIN.com.hk
DOMAIN.tw
DOMAIN.com.tw
with our organization.
During our preliminary investigation, we found that these domain names' keyword is identical with your trademark. I wonder whether you consigned Coon Holding Ltd to register these domain names with us? Or is Coon Holding Ltd your business partner or distributor in Asia? If you have no relationship with this company, we assume that they have other purposes to obtain these domain names.
Currently, we have already postponed this company's application temporarily. Therefore please let the relevant person make a confirmation with me by telephone or email as soon as possible.
Thanks & Regards,
Adam Hao

we got one to our Turkish company this week. I checked the company's below name, address and website from google which were perfectly believable, but I woke up at the point when googling sender's name with the company's (to check whether Mr. or Mrs.), which directed me to this blogspot. THANK YOU FOR THIS WARNING. I almost believed that there were buisness people in Hong Kong who respect the trademarks globally.

Thanks for the information. Just received one of these ( Feb 2010).
ReplyDeleteThanks again.
I cant believe this is still kicking around and seeing so much play.
ReplyDeleteIt is a well thought out scam for sure.
I have also had this scam tried on me today by some guy calling himself Loudyn.
ReplyDeleteI have had a very entertaining conversation with this bloke, and he is still adament that he is genuine and will allow his client ('Mao-Mao') to buy all my domains if I dont pay up, even thought I have spammed him for the last hour or so with links to this thread and other similar threads.
Thanks for your prompt reply.
If you did not authorize them to register these domain names ,according to our working experience, there are 2 possibilities:
1. Mao-mao is a domain name investment company, they want to register these names before you and sell back to you to gain profits.
2. It may be a commercial method, Mao-mao is consigned by your competitor to register, make your clients confused.
If Mao-mao.registered these domain names, whether it will affect you? If you don't think their application will affect your company, you can give up, we will finish their registration. But if you think their registration will confuse your clients and harm your profits, We will start the dispute process to assist your dispute domain names. Hope get your decision ASAP, so that we can handle the next step.

--------
Yes, please go ahead and charge me loads of money for this.
Thanks.
----------
Dear Peter,
The following is a detailed price list:
domain.asia 31.45 GBP/Per Year
domain.cn 14.68 GBP/Per Year
domain.com.cn 14.68 GBP/Per Year
domain.com.hk 26.19 GBP/Per Year
domain.com.tw 26.19 GBP/Per Year
domain.hk 25.73 GBP/Per Year
domain.tw 25.73 GBP/Per Year
domain.de 31.62 GBP/Per Year
domain.es 32.12 GBP/Per Year
domain.fr 58.49 GBP/Per Year
Above price contains all costs, if you have no problem, then we will send you a dispute application form, and help you further dispute those domain names.
----------
I think you should definitely charge more than that, what kind of internet scam only asks for 15 quid?!
You were doing well, but this is not a patch on the Nigerian Lottery scam.
Well done for trying.
Pete.
---------------
Dear Peter,
I don't know why you said so? Our cooperation established on mutual trust. Since you want to dispute these domain names to protect your interests, you should fully trust us. Only this can we help you more properly. If you don't trust us and think us as cheating you. Then that will mean we loss the base of this cooperation. Then I have to suggest you give up disputing these domain names. You will know the truth after we finish the registration for Mao-mao.
Hope you can make the decision soon. Waiting for your reply.

Well the thing is, this seems to be a well documented scam.

The original email you sent me appears word for word in this article, same web address and same phone number.
I also have a trusted freind who has had this same scam attempted on him multiple times.
I am sorry but you have been rumbled. There is no mao-mao and your not getting any of my money.

Dear Peter,
If that is the case, then we will finish their registration within 36 hours through the procedures.

This scam is still alive and well. I received my first solicitation this morning. It looked like they would eventually ask for money so I went ahead and Google'd their name. When Google auto completed with "china one net scam", it was confirmed.
ReplyDeleteThanks for documenting this!
I have received the same e-mail
ReplyDeleteshame on youuuuuu and Thanks for documenting this!
alex
Yup! We received the same letter, verbatim but the company allegedly attempting to register our domain name was "Kentey Holdings, Ltd." and the sender was Aimee.
ReplyDeleteWhen I ignored their advice to register all the domains in question, they wrote back that "Bartey Company" (they got a little confused about what name they had originally used) could not be put on hold much longer and could they send the "dispute application form" so that I could protect and register these domain names.
Clever, but the English in the follow-up letters is much poorer than in the original which is a givaway that you're dealing with different people each time. Big red flag.
I received one today. I suspected it was a scam, but this thread confirmed it. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThe tip-off for me was a supposedly Hong Kong domain registrar using a .com address.
I received one email from Angel (Angel Lei )with this same letter and reply saying I didn't want those domains and they reply trying to confuse me saying I didn't want legal rights of my company!!!! Just because I didn't want those domains!
ReplyDeleteThere is anything to do legally against emails like those?
Now I could comfirmed my suspiciuos... it was very strange.
Thanks and so nice to discover all these informations; I had received same emails from 'Serena Zhou' of this ''professional intellectual property right consultant organization in Asia''; I was worried for weeks... now I can sleep well... real HK consultant company won't use this method to catch clients, they are so bad and pretending to be 'good' and care for you. Don't trust them.
ReplyDeleteone of those Emails from them as follow:-----E-mail d'origine-----
Dear xxxx,
Government request us to audit and record the application during the process of registration. If the original owner company of the domain names has no intention to protect the domain names, we should register the domain names for the applicant. Each company has its own thinking, all we can do is to respect your decision.
1.I have been doing my best to help you all these days.Of course, when I found that you are gthe owner of .com, I informed you of this case the very first time, and reprieved the application of that company. Our company is a leading domain name registration agencies in Asia,we have cooperated with many EU wellknown enterprises, For example:NEW LOOK,TLT,THONET,LOREAL.For more information, you can visit our website http://www.chinaonenet.hk.
2.In the state of stagnant economy, I think your company is a quarry of many people, their first intention is to take your rights on the internet. I believe your company looks for lasting development. Because your products have been much affirmed by customers. If they register the domain for imitating you web. And invade some market of you or link to some illegal porno webs or sell to your competitors, even something worse.
3.I think you shoud learn about the case of Google.google.cn and google.com.cn had been grabbed by other company in 2004, and Goolge had paied 1 million yuan (US$123,456) to get the two domain names back.I don't know why you have to take the legal action till your domain names to be registered by others, you'll take a great losses if so.Following is google case, hope it can help you understand this kind of issue on internet.

4.In 2008, the domain name registration number of .cn is twice as that of .com, you could see that more and more foreign companies are throwing their sight on Asia, especially China.
5.Do you also give up the brand keyword " ________"?
Please assess my word carefully,As a domain name registration organization, what we can do is do our best to inform you this matter. I sincerely hope you will attach great importance to your intellectual property!
Hearing from you!

Just recieved a similar email.
ReplyDeleteOpening paragraph says:

Is there a way to stop this kind of scam?

Hello,
ReplyDeletetried the same in Europe,Belgium on 29 March 2010.
They are really not professional since they said somebody wanted to register a trademark of us.
If they already say we have a trademark, why should they contact us anyway.
Be sure to do some research yourself before doing business with somebody.
This domain exists since years as they post in the footing of their website:
Copyright © 2003 - 2012 chinaonenet.hk All Rights Reserved
China OneNet Technology Limited
Checking it with http://www.archive.org/web/web.php
and typing in their domain name says it does not have a as long track record as they state.
They simply don't have a track record (yet):
" 0 pages found for http://chinaonenet.hk/ "
Further, they ripp email extensions, so that says enough.
They never looked on my website.
Other hint:
open unknown emails first in the source code (hotmail f.e. with right mouse click and look at source code) .Check first what's in it. Check the legacy and only if you're sure, let your email not consider it as junk, put it in your normal inbox and open it.
And even if it were true, I would be very happy somebody tried to ripp something, since it legally protected for free.
A bullet proof trademark protection by law, what do you want more ?
Why make a trademark if you can protect yourself for free?
My protection costed me 0 Euros, who could do better.
I don't need legal protection through trademarks
Once they would ripp something and do business with it, I can easily wait 1-2 years before attacking, closing them down or profit from their business model (if I would like to)
Hope this few things help
Best regards

ReplyDeleteDear Manager,
We are a professional intellectual property rights consultant organization, mainly engaged in domain name registration and internet intellectual property rights protection.
We formally received an application from KangDa(Hong Kong) Investments Limited on April.1st. , 2010, whom applied for registering the internet keyword “ mydomain ” and some related domain names with our organization.
During our preliminary investigation, we found the keyword of those domain names is identical as your trademark. Therefore, we need to confirm with you whether you consigned KangDa (Hong Kong) Investments Limited to register with us or not? Or, is KangDa(Hong Kong) Investments Limited your partner or distributor? If you don’t have any relationship with this company, they may probably have other purposes to obtain those domain names and internet keyword.
We have already suspended this company's application temporarily due to the seriousness of this issue. In order to avoid the vicious domain name grab, please let your principal make a confirmation with me via telephone or email as soon as possible. Thank you for your support to our work!

Dear CEO,
We are a professional intellectual property rights consultant organization in Asia, who mainly deal with the global domain name registration and internet intellectual property right protection.
Right now we have an important issue to confirm with you. On April 9, 2010, we formally received an application, one company named Jisji Info Investment Corp applied for the internet keyword "Earthshareca" and some domain names related to the keyword "Earthshareca" with our organization.
During our preliminary investigation, we found that these domain names' keyword is identical with yours. I wonder whether you consigned Jisji Info Investment Corp to register these domain names with us? Or is Jisji Info Investment Corp your business partner or distributor in Asia? If you have no relationship with this company, we assume that they have other purposes to obtain these domain names.
Currently, we have already postponed this company's application temporarily. Therefore please let the relevant person make a confirmation with me as soon as possible.

Dear President & CEO,
We are a domain name dispute and register organization. Currently, we have a pretty important issue needing to confirm with your company. On April.21.2010, we received an application formally.A company name“Bekman International Investment Co., Ltd" submitted the application to our organization, and they required to register some domain names with the internet trademark of "xxxxxxxx".
Now we are handling with the registration of these domain names and find that the keyword of these domain names and internet trademark is identical with your company's. So we have to confirm with you at two points:
1. If your company has consigned or authorized Bekman to apply to register those domain names and the internet trademark with us, then we will finish their registration according to the procedures.
2. If your company has not consigned or authorized Bekman to apply to register those domain names and the internet trademark, then according to our working experience, they might have other purposes. So we have responsibility to confirm with you.
Now we temporarily have not finished the registration for Bekman, but delayed their application through the procedures, but this is not the best way. In order to solve this case in a better way, please contact me through email or phone the very first asaastime. Waiting for your reply.

Still going strong. I replied to go ahead and let so-and-so buy my domain names. They respond to this with even more arguments. Here is the latest correspondance:
ReplyDeleteDear Sir/Madam,
But I still remind you, if they want to use these domains to imitate your web, make fake want ad to deceive people, or to be a illegal web, do you know they won't hurt your interest? So I suggest you'd better protect these intangible. We won't importune you do anything. As a domain name registrar, we have do our work well. If you said that, we will pass the registration of that company within 48 hours, we are not responsible for any dispute question about intellectual property right and trademark after they succeed in registering.
I advise you to consider the internet keyword, because it is very important to you. Below is the detailed explaination of internet trademark:
<1>: Internet keyword is the extension of trademark and brand in the internet world. It decides the stability and activity of keyword in the world of internet.
<2>: After registration, any person in any district can type the keyword directly on the IE browser, then they can go to your official website. But If registered by other company, it will affect the rank of this keyword in google search engine. In another word, if you do not protect it, the result won't in the first page of any search engine (Google/ Yahoo etc.) even if you pay much money and time for propaganda. Especially in Asia, your clients can't search your company.
<3>: After the successful registration, Chinese government will award you an electronic certificate, which will prove your validity of using this trademark in the internet.
Every international corporation has protected its keyword.
Thanks & Regards,
Endy

---------------
Dear,
Thank you for your reply.
If you have no relationship with them. According to our working experience, there are 3 possibilities:
1. Shairan is a domain name investment company, they want to register these names before you and sell back to you to gain profits.
2. It may be a commercial method, Shairan is consigned by your competitor to register, let your clients feel confusion.
3. Shairan wants to copy your product of the same kind by your good reputation.
The domain names and the internet keyword which Shairan company applied for registering are as follows:
Internet Keyword : domain
Domain Name :
domain.net.cn
domain.ie
domain.com.es
domain.af
We have already suspended this company's application temporarily due to the seriousness of this issue.
But the domain name takes open registration to the public, which is international domain name registration principle,Shairan Company has right to apply for any domain names available. As a domain name registrar, we have no right to dispute their application. I think you must hear some reports about the domain names grabber, and such issues still frequently happen internationally. we also don't wish you company suffer any infringement on the interests in the future caused by cyber squatter.
As the owner of “MYDOMAIN”, you get the priority to register these domain names and internet keyword. If you decide to dispute those domain names, we will send detailed dispute procedure to you by our auditing Dept. to help your company protect those domain names. However, if you don't think their registration will have impact on your profits, you can give up, we will finish their registration. If you have any question, please do not hesitate contact me ASAP.Have a nice day!
Best Regards,

Thanks for your email. During the auditing process, we found "www.+++++++++++++.at" has been registered by your company, so we have the responsibility to inform you about this issue.

Because domain name takes open registration, this is international domain name registration principle. So Kennongs Manufacture Co.LTD has right to register it. But if you don't think their application will do harm to your profits, you can give up, we will finish their registration.
Hopefully you can give me your decision ASAP so that we can conduct the next step work.

I had to search for China OneNet to find this site -- I didn't get the best results when searching for Endy Lee. I got a similar email probably about 6 months ago at my personal email address and just ignored it, so hopefully ignoring it is all it takes. Would love to hear from folks who dealt with this a while ago to see if they continue to be harassed or not. Am assuming they would post something if they were, so hopefully they're not dealing with these people any more.

googled their name and they don't exist, and luckily I got here.
Thank you very much for documenting this!
one thing it did though, made me reconsider trademarking my company name :)
We get one of these requests every couple of weeks. Always from Asia and not like the bad scammers who use a gmail or yahoo email address. Our policy is to send a very strong cease and desist letter referring to the ICANN registration dispute procedures. That alone used to stop them cold. Now we get one or two follow up letters urging us to register. Tonight I sent a note essentially calling their bluff, saying if XYZ company exists and actually registers a TLD with our trademark name we will use the ICANN rules. I then added that I was filing a report with the international body in charge of domain registration (just in case it is a legit company).
ReplyDeleteHere is the exact text of the 'pitch.'

After finishing the application for Twins within two years we will not take any legal responsibility, Twins will be the only owner of these domain names, and can use this domain names all over the world. Got one from RANNY with "Varken AP holdings Co LTD" - never heard- and I'm really glad reading all these comments. Thanks to all from Germany!
ReplyDeleteDear President&CEO,
We are a professional intellectual property right consultant organization, mainly engaged in domain name registration and internet intellectual property rights protection.
Right now we have an important issue to confirm with you. On August 2, 2010, we formally received an application, one company named "Varken AP holdings Co LTD" applied for Internet keyword“hausrheinsberg”and some related domains with our organization.
During our preliminary investigation, we found the keyword of these domains is identical as your trademark. Therefore, we need to confirm with you whether you consigned“Varken AP holdings Co LTD”to register with us or not? Or, is“Varken AP holdings Co LTD”your partner or distributor? If you have no relationship with this company, they may probably have other purposes to obtain these domains and the internet keyword.
Currently, we have already postponed this company's application temporarily due to the seriousness of this issue. Therefore please let your principal make a confirmation with me via telephone or email as soon as possible.
Thanks & Regards,

Hi all,
ReplyDeleteI received this stupid time-wasting rubbish from Loudyn about 2 weeks ago and I've been playing him for a bit on it but it was worrying me slightly even though everyone told me it was a scam. I even had a mobile phone call from them today, and I have NO IDEA how they got hold of my phone number but I'd hung up before it crossed my mind to ask them. Smart f***ers!! Anyhow after getting off the phone I googled the name of the company that they said wanted to buy my domain names and I was really pleased to come across this blog so thank-you everyone for convincing me of the truth.
All the best,
Úna.
PS. Mine went like this, (I have edited the domain names as I don't want this to be the first site to come up when people google me!)
Dear President & CEO,
We are a domain name dispute and register organization. Currently, we have a pretty important issue needing to confirm with your company . On July.14.2010, we received an application formally . A company name" Meiker International Investment Co., Ltd. " submitted the application to our organization, and they required to register some domain names with the internet keyword of " u******e".
Now we are handling with the registration of these domain names and find that the keyword of these domain names and internet keyword is identical with your company's. So we have to confirm with you at two points:
1. If your company has consigned or authorized Meiker to apply to register those domain names and the internet keyword with us, then we will finish their registration according to the procedures.
2. If your company has not consigned or authorized Meiker to apply to register those domain names and the internet keyword , then according to our working experience, they might have other purposes.
So we have responsibility to confirm with you.
Now we temporarily have not finished the registration for Meiker, we are only temporarily delayed their application for registration, but this is not the best way. In order to deal with this issue better, please contact us by telephone or email as soon as possible.
Waiting for your reply.
Thanks & Regards,

I got the same one as Anonymous August 16. There is a real company called Meike International Investment (not Meiker). He seems to use names of real companies to inspire confidence, but they are usually spelt slightly wrong. A friend who has several domain names tells me he has had dozens of these messages.
