Emails like this are scams. This company was not asked to register any domains. They are lying about that. Instead, the company wants to sign you for expensive, but unnecessary, services. Ignore these messages.

Gold dust? That's a nice twist on the usual scam. But this is most definitely a scam. Don't reply to messages like this; you should delete them instead.

This is a rare case, by the way, when you're not asked to reply to a different email address. That's the sign of a hacked mailbox, or a mailbox set up specifically by the scammer.

The scammer is trying to trick you with a fake inheritance

It must be nice to inherit a lot of money from someone who found your address on the Internet. But the only person who will make money from this transaction is the scammer. Don't be fooled by the religious overtones — this is s scam. Don't reply to messages like this - you should simply delete them. Note that there are three separate email addresses used in this scam. That is common in scams like this.

Some scammers try to evade spam filters by putting the spam payload into a zipped attachment. Didn't work. Messages like this are always scams. Delete them, don't reply, don't be fooled. But you can enjoy a laugh at them, such as by the idea that the director of the FBI would send you an email from a German domain, with a reply-to address somewhere in the Indian Ocean.

I see messages like this occasionally. Unfortunately, I know people who have fallen for them and sent money. That's the real tragedy. Messages like this are scams, pure and simple. Delete these messages, don't reply to them.

This particular message claims to have been sent from the pacbell.net domain, but actually entered the mail stream from the listed yahoo.com address.

Fakes sales inquiries - what's the catch?

I don't understand the scam in these messages, but am convinced they are not legitimate. I have received dozens of these sales messages, all from different email addresses. A few of them are shared below.

These message have some generally comment elements that indicate that they are machine-generated. For example, the name of the product, such as a park bench or a scale base, is often in parentheses.

The messages enter the mail stream from different open relays. The first message below claims to come from a gmail address, but it actually was posted by lunariffic.com, a web hosting company.

Perhaps a key element is the mention of credit cards. In any case, message like this are a scam. Don't reply to them, don't be fooled into providing any information to the scammers.

Today's scam is a fake email from Western Union. I received three of these at different email addresses - none of which has a Western Union "profile." The links go to a phishing site that wants to steal your login and password, as well as other personal information.

The payload of this message is in a text-only attachment. The message itself claims to be from the cs.com domain, which is CompuServe, and it's possible that's where it entered the mail stream. The reply-to address for the message is the same as in the attachment, belonging to an Internet service provider in Mongolia. The country code for the phone number, 234, is Nigeria.

The accusation that U.S. Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke wants to steal your money — and put it into his personal bank account — makes for an amusing touch.

Don't open attachments in emails like this or click any links. Instead, delete immediately.

This fake email from CBN appears to come from a Gmail account, but actually oriented from a mail server calling itself rvhyd.net -- which is a non-legitimate domain. See that the from and reply-to addresses are different - and the address in the message body is different again.

Don't be fooled by scam messages like this, but simply delete them immediately.

Wow, it looks like an official U.S. government email address, complete with a convincing-looking "antifraud.ir.gov" domain. Well, no. This email actually entered the mailstream from a mail server in Toronto. The mail server gave off its address as nkajdionhecdv.com, but there is no domain registered with that address.

What about the message itself? Both links actually open sessions at http://new-irs-reports.com/, a known phasing domain which looks like the real IRS website. Do not click links in emails like this; instead, delete them immediately.

Isn't it odd that UNECA, a "United National Economic Commission for Africa," is sending email from armlocksmiths.com, a locksmith in East Sussex, England? And would use a reply-to address that's a Chinese Yahoo account?

This is a scam, pure and simple. At some point, after you replied, you would be asked to provide some personal information that could be used for identity theft, bank account information that could be used to pull money out of your accounts, and/or "fees" to expedite the process. Don't reply to messages like this.

Don't be fooled by this variation on the lottery scam. This email follows the common pattern of coming in from one address, with the reply set to go to a second address. Also, as is also common, the names don't match.

In this case, the email apparently was sent from a hacked email box at Halmstad University (hh.se) in Sweden. The reply-to address goes to a gmail account. Neither of those addresses belong to the Eglise catholique en France. Don't be fooled - don't reply to messages like this.

It sounds like such a sure thing, doesn't it? After all, the email says that "We obtained an irrevocable payment guarantee on your Payment from the presidency," whatever that means.

In reality, this is a scam. They will attempt to get money out of you. Don't be fooled, don't reply to message like this. Simply delete them.

This message entered the mailstream from a server at telepacific.net, a carrier in Southern California, but the email addresses cited are in in Armenia. However, that doesn't mean anything; the scammers could be anywhere.

The email itself originated on a hacked Yahoo account, but had a forged return address on RocketMail.

Don't be fooled -- no official government agency is going to contact you via email to give you money. The real way to be "sanitizing our society" would be for these scammers to just go away.

Don't use the link to check your mailbox storage limits

This is more of a phishing scheme than a spam scam, but it's worth commenting nonetheless. The headers show that the message was sent via a hacked mailbox belonging to a school administrator in Indianapolis. The link following the "click here" goes to a login form hosted on baroncapital.com, a financial services management company in Scottsdale, Arizona; it looks like someone infiltrated their server to deposit the form.

The form itself asks for your username, password and other personal identifiers -- which, of course, are sent right to the hackers.

Two lessons to be learned here:

First, protect your email account and server. Someone in Indianapolis messed up by letting his/her mailbox be hacked, and so did someone at Baron Capital.

Second, even if the email looks legit, don't click links!

Here's another scam - it looks like it came from a hacked or temporary gmail account, osjksdkdt@gmail.com. However, the headers aren't completely clear in this case. What is clear, of course, is that this is a scam, even if it does refer to the "wrong attitudes" of U.S. banking officials. Don't reply to messages like this. (And yes, there was nothing after the salutation "Dear.")

This is your basic scam. What more is there to say? According to headers, the email originated at email originated at the South African server cp3.snowballeffect.net. Of course, there's no way of knowing how the scammer got into that server.

The phone number listed for Mr. Saltzman, (347) 355 355l -- assuming you change the L into a 1 -- belongs to a cell phone on a Brooklyn, N.Y., exchange.

This message was sent by a clever scammer who was actually using a gmail.com account, jstevens1850@gmail.com, to get this message out. However, the scam looks like it came from an AOL account.

I guess I don't feel back for this mysterious Jack, since he's actually a scammer who's going to ask you to wire him money. Don't be fooled, don't reply, to messages like this. If you receive a message like this from someone that you think you know, try contacting him/her via phone using a known number, or verify that he/she is actually out of the country. Often these come from hijacked email accounts -- so if you reply via email, the scammer will see your message.

The scammer claims that the bank had a customer, Mr. Fred Buther, who owned a gold mine -- but is now deceased. If you claim to be Mr. Buther's kin, Mr. Levenstein will split the money with you 50/50. Click the image to see the entire document.

It's a horrible spam from a hacked mailbox

This message came in today from a cousin's email address — and freaked out some members of my extended family. However, it's a total scam. Someone hacked in my cousin's email address (either by guessing her password or by phishing for it) and sent out these messages. One family member actually went to the bank to get cash to send to London!

Needless to say, my cousin is safe at home — and was initially somewhat confused because she couldn't get into her email. One of the first things the scammers did was change her password. And then the phone started ringing….

If you see messages like this, don't respond, don't be fooled. Do not try to get back to the family member by email, but use other means. Remember, the scammer has access to the email account, and can answer. Being bcc'd on a message (which I was) is one sign that it's not legit. (But if you're not bcc'd, that's not proof that the message is legitimate.)

Here's an account of someone who received a very similar message earlier this year — it's possibly from the same scammers, as it's nearly word-for-word identical. Don't be fooled!

This is a confusing message, but one part of it is crystal clear: This is a scam. It wasn't sent by a U.S. soldier named David Cox or Daviid Cox or David Dean, but by someone trying to con you. When you reply, the "confidential" message will an invitation to help launder money, or something like that. This is the usual protection racket: If you contact them, they will charge you hefty fees to "protect" your domains. However, your domains are perfectly safe without their protection. Don't be fooled - ignore messages like this. Even if they do claim to care about saving trees.

This scam message simply wasn't very convincing. Why would PayPal want to send me to a .tk website? .tk means Tokelau, a part of New Zealand. Also, why would PayPal include me as a bcc? It doesn't matter. The whole email doesn't make any sense. Don't respond to scams like this, don't click the links, don't be fooled. The best response is to delete the message immediately.

This scammer — whether his name is Mickeon, McKeon or otherwise — is sending out emails hoping that you'll be scared enough to buy overpriced services… which won't actually protect anything. It's a racket, it's a scam. Don't respond, don't be fooled by messages like this. Just delete them, and your Internet domains will be just fine.

When you see "Dear Beneficiary," you should stop and hit the delete key right there. I don't think that the Nigerian president is really interested in giving you ten million dollars -- even if you can only withdraw $21,000 per day.

This an attempt to get personal information; at some point, they'll ask for either fees or for your bank account information to set up a wire transfer. With the personal identity information they have, they could then take over your account and withdraw all your money. Don't respond, don't be fooled, by scam messages like this.

The scammers don't waste any time in this one — they simply instruct you to send your personal details to someone at Citibank. Hmm, does Citibank really send messages from "london.com"? And do they want replies sent to a Yahoo address in Japan?

No matter, even if the addresses looked legitimate, this message wouldn't be. No bank would contact you about something like this via email. If you did respond, the next message would ask for your bank account details for a wire transfer. Using all this information, however, the money transfer would be out of your account, not into it. Don't respond, don't be fooled, by messages like this.

Don't write to Hong Kong about your bogus Canadian lottery winnings

If you received a message like the one below, no, you didn't win the British Canadian lottery. You didn't win any lottery at all. But you would be a loser if you replied, because undoubtedly there will be upfront fees that you'll have to pay to claim your "winnings," which sadly will never materialize. The plethora of numbers in the message below are intended to make it appear more authentic, as is the link to a real Canadian lottery site. However, it's still a scam. Don't respond, don't be fooled, by messages like this.

Interestingly, I received nearly the same message — complete with all the same lottery code numbers — at a different email address. However, that message was from info@lotto.com and had a reply-to address of bclotto99@yahoo.com. The bogus "contact person" was Mr. David Telehany, and the message was signed by Mark Andrew, who is also the Lottery Controller General. I guess they job-share.

The short message below was accompanied by file named jamestyler.vcf, which would appear to be a vCard file — something that you'd click to add someone's contact info to your Outlook address book. However, the .vcf file is malformed. Is it an attempt to hack Outlook?

Do not click or open attachments that you receive from anyone you don't know — or even from someone you do know, if the message looks suspicious. This message certainly looks suspicious, based not only on its content, but also by the from and reply-to email addresses, and also by the fact that my address was a "bcc" address.

This message entered the mailstream from the entelchile.cl server, which is is hosting company in Chile. Don't be fooled by responding to such messages, or by clicking their attachments.

The fact that it's claiming to be from a "Scam Victims Compensations" office doesn't make it any less of a scam. A link to a genuine FedEx page about international rates also doesn't make the message legitimate.

First of all, any message about money — whether it's lottery prizes or hidden wealth from war zones — that is sent out to a bcc list is a scam. Second of all, nobody is going to send you money that you don't know. Third of all, why would a company called Moneybookers.com (which is a real company) send you to a third-party hosting site to "claim" your money?

This particular email seems to have entered the Internet via an SMTP server at koso.net, a hosting service in South Korea.

If you reply, the scammer will pressure you to buy high-priced services to "buy back" your domain and to "guarantee" that nobody else buys it in the future. If you do nothing, nothing will happen. This is an interesting scam, which I've been receiving often this month at various info@ addresses, none of which belongs to a law firm. I wonder what the angle is? Perhaps you'll be asked for an upfront fee to take on their collections business.

The scammer uses three different email addresses, all from public services. Don't respond to such messages, just delete them.

One easy way to spot scams is that the scammer promises that the transaction "remarkably" will be risk-free. If it was truly legitimate, would they need to say this?

Another way to tell is when the domains and the countries don't match up. This is a Nigerian guy, sending email from a New Zealand domain (canterbury.ac.nz) with an address belonging to someone else (Michael Hartshorn). The recipient is instructed to reply to a different address — in this case, belonging to live.com, which is one of Microsoft's free email services hosted in the U.S.

Does this seem legitimate to you? Of course not. Don't respond, don't be fooled by these types of scams.

Yeah, yeah. It's a scam. Unlike some of these scammers, these jokers don't even try to personalize the message.

If you respond at all, scammers like these will try to get money out of you. Maybe they'll register your domain names themselves, and try to sell them to you. Or they'll offer to "buy" them from someone else who -- amazingly -- has just grabbed them. Or they'll try to sell you an expensive monitoring solution to prevent this from happening again. Or all of the above.

If you don't do anything, of course, nothing will happen at all. Don't reply, don't be fooled or pay any attention to these scammers.

Fraud happens all the time in banking circles

Here's a classic scam-spam letter, but sent via the postal service. In this case, it was a letter sent to a friend via first-class mail. There was no return address, and the letter was mailed from Canada. However, we are told to contact someone in Hong Kong.

Click the image to see the letter full-size; I scanned the actual letter, and blanked out my friend's personal details. Here are some items that stood out:

1. The line "I know this might be a little heavy for you but please trust me on this" is an odd one.

2. The pitch is, "For all your troubles I propose that we split the money in half. In the banking circle this happens all the time."

3. The scammer tries to gain trust with "Please, again, note I am a family man; I have a wife and children."

It's quite noteworthy is that the scam was delivered by post — and therefore, this cost the scammer real money. Email is essentially free, which is why most scams are sent via email. Posted letters cost money and take effort for supplies (paper and envelopes), printing, stuffing and mailing. That's why we see so few scams coming by postal mail.

Don't reply, don't be fooled by such messages. They are scams whether they come via email or postal mail.

This is a wonderful scam message, with many classic spam elements: A prize to a contest you didn't enter. Random-sounding ticket numbers. Warnings about a "possible mixup" of numbers and contacts. A request for a personal information. Tons of other gibberish.

The contact with a fancy title, in this case, "Senator," is supposed to help make the scam sound legitimate; often, these messages reference a member of the clergy, or an attorney or judge. However, no matter how you slice it, the message is 100% pure scam. Don't reply, don't be fooled by such messages.

The fake "Mrs. Patel" sure gets around. She forged a Polish email address, but the message originated from a Dutch server. The reply-to header's address lists Sify.com, which is in India. The cooltoad.com service is in Canada. And the scam mentions Benin and South Africa, and a host of other countries. Is that supposed to make it more credible?

In any case, this message is a scam. Don't be fooled, don't reply.

Here's an example of a really mixed-up scam. Is this about inheritance? Contracts? Lottery winners? It's a muddle. The fact that it's in all caps, of course, makes it even worse. Sorry, the one-line "profile" doesn't add real legitimacy or cancel out all the typos. Nobody should be fooled by such an amateurish effort, but you never know. Don't be fooled, don't reply to any messages like this. Real bankers won't contact you via email about your inheritance.

A scam just arrived in my Facebook inbox. It was apparently sent from a Facebook account named Tofa Maxwell. It's unclear how to report such messages to Facebook in any meaningful way. My advice is to simply delete such messages without responding.

Do you ever get messages like this? You can be assured that no stranger is writing to you, out of the blue, to cut you in on a huge fortune. It's just not going to happen.

I have no idea who really sent this message, but you may be assured that it wasn't a U.S. soldier who found $21 million in Iraq. It's a scammer who is going to use this as bait to lure you in... and then get money or bank-account access from you. Links to random BBC news stories do not make the scammer any more legitimate -- anyone can link to a news story.

Don't be fooled, don't respond to messages like this, even if you feel bad that the fellow's uncle is "late."

New scam has hackers or phishers phoning users: Be warned

A good friend — a computer expert — just sent me this account of a strange experience this afternoon. It's scary, especially for those whose "skeptic flag" is turned off. If you get a call like this, at home or at work… don't do what the caller wants. It's undoubtedly not good for you. Here's my friend's account of this episode:

Got a weird phone call just now. Guy with Indian accent who said he was calling to help me with my Windows problems — I don't have any, but he said they were calling 'all' Windows owners to fix problems causing computer to run slowly. He rattled off the name of his company, and after I asked several times I finally got: "Support On Click." The number on my phone readout was 05-247-9749 — and it said "Out of Area." Odd number.

Cautiously, I let him continue. He had me click Start-Run and type in eventvwr, and then click on Applications and tell him how many Error flags I had — well, there were hundreds, just from this past month. He asked for a little info about them, and started a spiel about how many people were having these kinds of problems. It sounded like the canned beginning of a sales pitch.

I finally said I wasn't interested and hung up on him. He called back a minute later but I let it go to voicemail, whereupon he hung up.

Was it a sales pitch to get my credit card? A scammer planning to get me to read him something fatal off my screen? Hacker wanting me to enter some command that would give control to a virus or something? I would have hung on to find out where he was going with this, but he was taking too long. Clearly, he was prepped for inexperienced computer users, so he took forever with his instructions, and I lost patience.

A Nigerian hijacking of the electronic kind

A friend of mine received this from the email address of his friend Karen. Needless to say, she wasn't in Nigeria and she didn't send this message. Her email account had been hijacked.

If you get a message like this from someone you know, don't respond electronically or via the means suggested in the email. Instead, contact, the person directly using his/her usual contact info. Never be fooled like messages like this.
